To promote and preserve the proper recognition of the medical secretary as a professional member of the medical team.
To provide educational courses and meetings to ensure proper training and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
To provide professional advice and support to members.
To liaise with other organisations to promote the interests of medical secretaries.

Management
The Executive Committee is elected by the members and manages the affairs of the Society. The Society’s audited accounts are available to members and are approved by them at the Annual General Meeting. The Training and Development Group, a sub-committee of the Executive Committee, is responsible for the organisation of courses and assessments.

Meetings
The AGM takes place during the Annual Conference which is held in the Autumn in different parts of the country each year; this includes workshops and lectures. During the Spring, several meetings are held in different parts of the country. In addition, local meetings are arranged by Local Representatives.

Medical secretaries play a pivotal role in health professional teams, contending with high levels of work and stress whilst dealing professionally with colleagues and patients and embracing new technology and constant change! The British Society of Medical Secretaries recognises and rewards the work of outstanding medical secretaries. For details of the 2007 winners, please see under Annual Awards.

The Journal of Medical Secretaries is included in membership

Membership of the BSMS includes a free subscription to the Journal of Medical Secretaries. This is a regular journal that publishes a broad range of articles, ranging from serious debates on information technology, medical and secretarial practice, the status of the medical secretary within the medical profession and news from the Society's officers. On the lighter side, there are handy tips for the medical secretary and humorous articles for easy reading during coffee breaks.

Members will receive their issues of the journal in the post and will also be able to access the articles online.

You can publish a short piece or a full article. All members are encouraged to contribute to the journal.
